Formula and rules

  • Add or subtract: rewrite both fractions over the least common denominator, then combine the numerators
  • Multiply: multiply the numerators together and the denominators together
  • Divide: keep the first fraction, flip the second one and multiply
  • Reduce the answer by dividing the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common divisor
  • A fraction whose numerator is larger than the denominator becomes a mixed number such as 1 5/6

Worked examples

3/4 + 1/6

Input First fraction 3/4, operation Add, second fraction 1/6.

Result 3/4 + 1/6 = 11/12, which is about 0.9167 as a decimal.

7/3 − 1/2

Input First fraction 7/3, operation Subtract, second fraction 1/2.

Result 7/3 − 1/2 = 11/6, which is the mixed number 1 5/6 or about 1.8333.

2/5 × 3/4

Input First fraction 2/5, operation Multiply, second fraction 3/4.

Result 2/5 × 3/4 = 6/20, reduced to 3/10, or 0.3 as a decimal.

FAQ

Do I need a common denominator to multiply fractions?

No. Multiplication and division work directly across numerators and denominators, so a common denominator is only needed for addition and subtraction.

Why is the answer always shown reduced?

A reduced fraction is the standard final form, and the decimal value is identical either way. Dividing both parts by their greatest common divisor keeps the number the same while making it easier to read and compare.

Can the fractions be negative or improper?

Yes. Type the minus sign in the numerator, keep the denominator positive, and improper fractions such as 7/3 are fine. The mixed-number output shows the whole part separately.
