Formula and rules

  • GPA = Σ(grade point × course credits) ÷ Σ(course credits)
  • 4.5 scale: A+ 4.5, A 4.0, B+ 3.5, B 3.0, B- 2.5, C+ 2.0, C 1.5, C- 1.0, D+ 0.5, D 0, F 0
  • 4.3 scale: A+ 4.3, A 4.0, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, F 0
  • 4.0 scale: A+ 4.0, A 4.0, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, F 0
  • Courses with 0 credits are ignored because they do not affect the weighted average

Worked examples

Three courses on the 4.5 scale

Result GPA 4.00 on the 4.5 scale, 3.87 on 4.3 and 3.77 on 4.0.

Different credit weights

Input A+ with 3 credits, A+ with 3 credits, B+ with 2 credits, B with 3 credits.

Result 43.0 grade points ÷ 11 credits = 3.91 on the 4.5 scale, 3.76 on 4.3 and 3.60 on 4.0.

FAQ

Is a 4.5 scale GPA simply divided by 1.125 to get a 4.0 GPA?

Not reliably. Letter grades map differently on each scale, so A+ is 4.5 on the 4.5 scale but only 4.0 on the 4.0 scale. This calculator converts grade by grade, then weights by credits, which is what admissions offices do.

Are Korean universities on a 4.5 or 4.3 scale?

Both exist. Most Korean universities use 4.5, while some professional and graduate programmes use 4.3. Check your transcript, because the same letter grade can carry a different point value at each school.

Do P/F or transfer courses count?

Usually not. Pass/fail courses carry no grade point, and transfer credits often appear without a grade. Leave them out unless your target university explicitly asks for them.
