Candle Wax Calculator

Craft & DIY

Work out exactly how much wax and fragrance oil a jar, tin or mold needs — in grams and ounces.

Your inputs

Browse all tools

cm

Fill to about 1 cm below the rim so the wax can shrink safely.

g/cm³

Soy wax is usually 0.86–0.90 g/cm³; paraffin is close to 0.90.

%

Most candle waxes hold 6–10%. Do not exceed the supplier maximum.

%

Wax left in the pitcher or lost to evaporation. 3–5% is typical.

Formula and rules

  • Cylinder volume = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × fill height
  • Rectangular volume = length × width × fill height
  • Wax weight = volume × wax density × batch size × (1 + melt loss)
  • Fragrance weight = wax weight × fragrance load %
  • Ounces = grams ÷ 28.35

Worked examples

Single 8 cm jar

Input Diameter 8 cm, fill height 8 cm, 1 candle, soy wax 0.86 g/cm³, 8% fragrance, 5% melt loss.

Result ≈ 363 g wax + 29 g fragrance = 392 g (13.8 oz) of melted wax.

Two 7 × 8 cm pillars

Input Diameter 7 cm, fill height 8 cm, 2 candles, 8% fragrance, 5% melt loss.

Result ≈ 556 g wax + 44 g fragrance = 601 g (21.2 oz).

10 × 10 × 8 cm block mold

Input Rectangular mold, 10 cm × 10 cm, fill height 8 cm, 8% fragrance, 5% melt loss.

Result ≈ 722 g wax + 58 g fragrance = 780 g (27.5 oz).

FAQ

Should fragrance be a percentage of the wax or of the finished candle?

Fragrance load is always calculated on the wax weight. A 500 g batch at 8% takes 40 g of fragrance oil, giving 540 g of pour weight.

Why does the calculator add a melt-loss allowance?

Some wax stays in the melting pitcher and a little evaporates. Without a 3–5% buffer the last jar in a batch often comes up short.

Can I use this for wax melts?

Yes. Choose the rectangular shape and enter the cavity dimensions as length, width and depth. Use the same fragrance percentage you would for a candle.
