Formula and rules

  • Weighted points earned = current grade × completed weight ÷ 100
  • Remaining weight = 100 − completed weight
  • Score needed = (target − earned) ÷ remaining weight × 100
  • Best final grade = earned + remaining weight, which is what you get by scoring 100% on everything left
  • A needed score above 100 means the target is out of reach, and a negative number means it is already secured

Worked examples

78 so far, aiming for 85

Input Current grade 78%, 60% of the course completed, target 85%.

Result You already hold 46.8 points, so the remaining 40% needs 95.5% and the best possible final grade is 86.8%.

92 so far, aiming for 90

Input Current grade 92%, 70% completed, target 90%.

Result 64.4 of the 90 points are secured, so the last 30% needs 85.3% to hit the target.

60 so far, aiming for 90

Input Current grade 60%, 50% completed, target 90%.

Result The remaining half would need 120%, which is impossible — 80% is the ceiling for this course.

FAQ

What does a needed score above 100 mean?

It means the target cannot be reached with the points still available. Check the best final grade output to see the ceiling, and adjust the target or ask about extra credit.

How do I know the weight already completed?

Use the syllabus. If the midterm is worth 30% and assignments 30%, and both are graded, the completed weight is 60%. Only count work that has a final score.

Does this work if my teacher uses total points instead of percentages?

Yes, if you convert. Divide the points earned so far by the points possible so far to get the current percentage, and treat the remaining points as the remaining weight share.
