Formula and rules

  • Whole-number quotient = largest integer whose product with the divisor does not exceed the dividend
  • Remainder = dividend − quotient × divisor
  • Each decimal digit: multiply the remainder by 10, divide by the divisor, record the digit and the new remainder
  • A remainder of 0 means the decimal terminates
  • A repeated remainder means the decimal repeats from that point onward
  • Simplified fraction = dividend ÷ divisor, with both sides divided by their greatest common divisor

Worked examples

1234 ÷ 12

Input Dividend 1234, divisor 12, 4 decimal places.

Result Whole-number quotient 102 remainder 10; the decimal repeats as 102.8(3).

100 ÷ 8

Input Dividend 100, divisor 8, 4 decimal places.

Result Quotient 12.5 exactly — a terminating decimal with remainder 0 in the decimal part.

1 ÷ 3

Input Dividend 1, divisor 3, 4 decimal places.

Result The same remainder reappears immediately, so the answer is written as 0.(3).

FAQ

What do the brackets in 102.8(3) mean?

Brackets mark the repeating block. 102.8(3) means 102.833333… with the 3 continuing forever, which is the standard notation for a repeating decimal.

Why does the calculator stop before the requested number of decimals?

When the decimal terminates or a repeating block is detected, the exact answer is already known. Showing more digits would just repeat the same pattern.

Can I divide decimals or negative numbers?

This page is designed for whole-number long division, which is what students practise. For decimal inputs, multiply both numbers by the same power of ten first so the divisor becomes a whole number.
