Formula and rules

  • Length and weight: result = value × base factor of the from-unit ÷ base factor of the to-unit
  • Length base is the metre: 1 km = 1,000 m, 1 cm = 0.01 m, 1 mm = 0.001 m, 1 in = 0.0254 m, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 yd = 0.9144 m, 1 mi = 1,609.344 m
  • Weight base is the kilogram: 1 g = 0.001 kg, 1 mg = 0.000001 kg, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 oz = 0.028349523125 kg, 1 st = 6.35029318 kg, 1 t = 1,000 kg
  • Temperature is a shifted scale, so it needs formulas rather than a single factor: °C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9, °C = K − 273.15, °F = °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32, K = °C + 273.15

Worked examples

5 kilometres in miles

Input Length, value 5, from km, to mi.

Result 5 × 1,000 ÷ 1,609.344 = 3.1069 mi, a factor of 0.621371 miles per kilometre.

154 pounds in kilograms

Input Weight, value 154, from lb, to kg.

Result 154 × 0.45359237 = 69.8532 kg, so a pound is 0.453592 kilograms.

100 °F in Celsius

Input Temperature, value 100, from °F, to °C.

Result (100 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 = 37.7778 °C, just under body temperature.

FAQ

Why does temperature not use a simple multiplication factor?

Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin have different zero points, so each scale needs a shift as well as a scale. That is why 0 °C equals 32 °F and 273.15 K rather than 0 in either scale.

Are the inch and pound factors exact?

Yes. Since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, 1 inch is exactly 0.0254 metres and 1 pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. The displayed result is rounded to four decimals, so long values may drift in the last digit.

Can I convert area, volume or speed here?

This converter covers length, weight and temperature only. For area and volume tied to a project, use the concrete, flooring or soil calculators, which already handle both measurement systems.
