FAQ

Is BMI reliable for athletes or very muscular people?

BMI only compares weight with height, so it cannot tell muscle from fat. A muscular athlete can read as overweight while carrying little body fat. Use waist measurements or body composition alongside BMI.

What is a healthy BMI?

For most adults 18.5 to 24.9 is classed as healthy, 25 to 29.9 as overweight and 30 or above as obese. Some clinical guidelines use lower cut-offs for people of Asian descent, so follow your doctor’s advice.

Can I use this BMI calculator for children?

No. Children and teenagers are assessed with age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles rather than fixed adult cut-offs. Use a paediatric growth chart or ask your doctor.
