Formula and rules

  • Foot length in centimetres is the common base, and every other system is derived from it.
  • EU size = foot length × 1.5 + 2, following the Paris point of two thirds of a centimetre per size.
  • UK size = foot length − 18.5, US men = UK + 1 and US women = UK + 2.
  • Japan sizes the shoe in centimetres, so the JP figure equals the foot length.
  • Mondopoint is the foot length in millimetres, so 26.5 cm becomes 265 mm.

FAQ

Why is a 26.5 cm foot an EU 42 but a UK 8?

The two scales start at different points. Europe counts in Paris points of two thirds of a centimetre and leaves roughly two sizes of room inside the shoe, while the British scale is close to one centimetre per size starting from a much smaller zero.

Do I need to add room for socks or insoles?

No. Shoe sizes already include a small allowance beyond the measured foot. If you wear thick socks or add an insole, go up half a size instead of changing the foot length.

Why do two brands disagree by half a size?

Last shape and toe box differ between brands, and running shoes are usually cut closer than hiking boots. Treat this converter as a starting point and check the brand chart for the final call.
