Formula and rules

  • Adding VAT: VAT = net × rate ÷ 100, then gross = net + VAT
  • Extracting VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), then VAT = gross − net
  • The standard rate is read from inc/rates/vat.php; a custom rate above 0 replaces it
  • Reduced bands, zero-rated goods and cross-border rules are not applied automatically

FAQ

Is the built-in rate table up to date?

Every rate carries an effective date, and the theme settings screen shows how old the table is. If a rate has changed, enter it in the custom rate field or update the data file — the formula itself never needs editing.

Why does Germany show 19% when food is taxed at 7%?

The table stores standard rates. Reduced bands depend on the product, so select the country for the standard rate and then type the reduced rate into the custom rate field.

Why divide instead of multiplying when the price already includes VAT?

At 20% VAT the gross price is 120% of the net price, so dividing by 1.2 recovers the net. Multiplying 120 by 20% would give 24, which overstates the tax that is actually inside the total.

How is this different from the sales tax calculator?

The sales tax calculator fills US state base rates and leaves county and city add-ons to you. This one carries national standard rates for 12 countries and stays focused on VAT and GST, including the reduced bands.
