Vim Classic is a fork of Vim 8.x created for long-term maintenance. Rather than tracking every upstream change, the project keeps the classic editor stable and dependable, and its maintainers state that the work is done entirely by humans without generative AI tools.
The site is deliberately minimal: links to documentation that can be browsed online or read through :help inside Vim Classic, the source code hosted on SourceHut, and three mailing lists for announcements, discussion and development. There is also an IRC channel, #vim-classic on irc.libera.chat, for real-time talk.
The first release, Vim Classic 8.3.0, was announced on 2026-06-02, and news is available via RSS. The project also points visitors to Kuwasha, a charity supporting orphaned children in Uganda, continuing Bram Moolenaar’s charitable legacy.
This site is aimed at developers, system administrators and long-time Vim users who value stability over new features, and who want a maintenance path for the 8.x line. Those who need the newest Vim features should look upstream instead.
To get started, read the documentation, clone the source from SourceHut, and subscribe to vim-classic-announce for release news. Contributions and questions are handled through the discuss and devel lists or IRC.
