Vela positions itself as a complete desktop environment for Linux rather than a theme or a collection of separate utilities. Its stated goal is a single coherent product: a shell, window management, and core applications designed together so that behavior and visual language stay consistent across the system.
The technical stack is unusually self-contained. Vela ships its own Wayland compositor with a scene graph built on wlroots, a Vulkan 1.4 renderer with no OpenGL fallback, and a shell written in Qt 6 and Qt Quick. Alongside these it provides its own Files manager with tabs, breadcrumbs, and previews, plus a Settings app built to match the shell.
Everyday features include instant search from the Start menu, pinned apps, keyboard navigation, snap layouts covering halves, quarters, and six arrangements, virtual desktops, quick settings, and notifications. Snap Assist and Super-key shortcuts are part of the intended workflow, and the project publishes a journal documenting progress.
The desktop is licensed GPL-3.0-or-later and is currently labeled beta while being described as usable every day. It ships in two languages, with Italian shown in the official screenshots. Because the renderer requires Vulkan and offers no GL fallback, users on older or unusual graphics hardware should verify compatibility before committing.
Vela is aimed at Linux users who value a unified design and are comfortable with a young, fast-moving project. Those wanting long-term stability or broad
