UNIX.dog is a public UNIX server run for and by its members, built around a FreeBSD host on a Hosthatch VPS with six cores, 24GB RAM, and combined NVMe and HDD storage. Rather than a commercial host, it presents itself as a shared hangout space where furries, queer folks, and allies can create and communicate.
Registered users receive a shell account, a customizable personal webpage under the unix.dog domain, and a working email address for sending and receiving mail. The service lineup extends to XMPP for real-time chat and Sharkey for federated social posting, with the operators openly inviting suggestions for additional services.
Because all resources are shared across users, the server is best suited to people comfortable with command-line environments and willing to be considerate of others. It is not aimed at high-traffic production sites or users needing guaranteed compute.
Newcomers should register, then join the XMPP MUC at discuss@muc.unix.dog to stay in touch; those without an XMPP account can create one on this or any other server. Reading the services page before requesting extras helps keep expectations aligned.
In short, UNIX.dog is a small, community-minded pubnix where a shell account doubles as a social membership.
