Thunderbird

Thunderbird is a free, open-source email and productivity application maintained by MZLA Technologies with community contributions. It positions itself as a way to “free your inbox” by giving users control over their mail, calendars, and contacts without locking them into a single service or platform. The project is available for Windows, Linux, and macOS on desktop, plus a mobile app for Android distributed through Google Play and F-Droid.

The core of the product is an email client that supports multiple accounts and common protocols, paired with an integrated calendar and address book so scheduling and contact management happen in the same place. Users can customize the interface, set up filters and message rules, and extend functionality through add-ons. Downloads are offered in many languages and in both 64-bit and 32-bit builds, which helps on older hardware.

It is aimed at individuals, students, and organizations that want a local desktop client rather than webmail, including users who value open-source software and data ownership. System administrators and small teams may appreciate multi-account handling and the ability to configure the app in detail, while casual users can start with a straightforward account setup.

New users should download the build matching their operating system and architecture, then add existing email accounts during the initial setup wizard. Exploring settings for layout, notifications, and filters early makes the app fit individual workflo
