The Pudding is a digital publication that explains ideas through visual essays, and this installment applies that approach to a familiar trivia game. Instead of simply asserting that Kevin Bacon sits at the middle of Hollywood, the story treats the claim as a hypothesis and sets out to test it with co-star data.
The core method is a network of actors linked by shared film credits, with each performer assigned a remoteness score based on average steps to a given hub. The essay walks through specific examples, from Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep to Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet, then widens the lens to compare Bacon against other possible centers of gravity.
It also adds a historical dimension, examining how the industry’s connective hub has moved over time as studios, genres, and production patterns changed. That makes the piece useful for readers interested in film history as much as in network analysis.
The presentation suits curious general readers, film fans, and anyone teaching graph concepts with a pop-culture hook. Because it is a single scrolling story, the best approach is to read top to bottom and use the embedded charts as the argument develops rather than skimming for a verdict.
What emerges is less a debunking than a recalibration: the game works, but the real center of Hollywood is more complicated and more changeable than the name suggests.
