MegaKey is a proposal to standardize and extend the Hyper and Meh keys into a system of five pseudo-modifier keys that work on standard keyboards. Rather than requiring special hardware, it defines a vocabulary for modifier combinations and then maps that vocabulary onto ordinary keys. The project is published as a GitHub repository and is aimed at people who think about keyboard shortcuts as a design problem, not just a convenience.
The mental side gives each modifier combination a name and symbol, so a long chord such as Shift+Ctrl+Opt+Cmd+C becomes Giga+C (❖C). Mega is treated as the base pseudo-modifier, with four variations that each add or remove one modifier. Because the naming concept is platform-neutral, it can be used to think about, read, write, or dictate shortcuts regardless of operating system.
The software side provides single-key mappings through Karabiner-Elements on macOS. Holding Caps Lock reaches Mega, while tapping it alone still produces Caps Lock in the default configuration. An optional clipboard demo maps Caps Lock+C to copy and Caps Lock+V to paste. The supplied rules are macOS-only, and the repository contains no Windows or Linux implementation.
