LWN.net is a long-running news publication focused on Linux and free software, with a strong emphasis on kernel development. Rather than chasing consumer tech headlines, it tracks patches, merge windows, release candidates, and security discussions as they happen on the development lists.
The site’s core offerings include kernel release coverage, security advisories, event calendars, and a weekly edition that summarizes the most important development threads. Articles often link to source material and include commentary from contributors, and readers can follow unread comments across discussions.
Its audience is primarily kernel developers, distribution maintainers, subsystem contributors, and security researchers who need accurate technical detail. People evaluating Linux changes for production or learning how upstream development works also rely on it.
Access is partly subscription-based: some content is free, while newer articles and full archives require a subscription. A practical approach is to start with the weekly edition and release announcements, then subscribe if you need timely access to the full body of reporting.
