Local Wikipedia is a location-based filter for Wikipedia content. Rather than browsing the entire encyclopedia, you enter a town, area, landmark or postcode, and the site returns only articles whose subjects have coordinates within roughly a half-hour walk. It is an independent project and states clearly that it has no affiliation with Wikipedia itself.
The core mechanic is a distance cutoff. If fewer than 25 geocoded items exist nearby, the site widens the net to the closest 25 within about six miles; if more than 500 exist, only the closest 500 are shown. Standard Wikipedia navigation remains available through a main page, random article and A–Z index, so you can still move around the source material.
It suits people who want quick local context: residents curious about their own street, walkers planning a route, or visitors who want to know what is worth noticing in an unfamiliar neighbourhood. Because entries are drawn from geocoded Wikipedia pages, coverage depends on what has been mapped and written up, so rural areas may feel sparse.
Use it by typing a place or allowing the browser to use your location, then browse the nearby list. Location data is kept in the browser and shared links do not include it, which makes sharing a local view relatively low-risk. Treat it as a starting point for exploration rather than a complete local guide.
