Color Names

Color Names is a community-built archive of 31,970 colors, each one named by an individual rather than generated by an algorithm. The site presents these as color cards positioned according to their actual hue, so browsing becomes a spatial wander through the spectrum instead of a list. It is explicitly open and free to use under the MIT license.

The core value is the dataset itself: a large, human-authored vocabulary of color names that can be pulled into other projects. It ships as an npm package and is also reachable through an API, so the names can be queried programmatically rather than only viewed in the browser. A “View every name” option gives a full-list perspective for those who want to scan rather than wander.

The site also offers an adoption mechanism: pick a favorite color, open it, and adopt it from $5, which puts your name on that color permanently. Each color can be adopted only once, making it a small patronage model that supports ongoing work on the list.

Designers looking for distinctive color vocabulary, writers searching for evocative names, and developers who need a ready-made color-name dataset are the natural audience. The uneven, personal quality of the names is part of the charm but also means the collection is not a substitute for standardized design-system palettes.

Use it by browsing the card space for inspiration, then grabbing the package or API when you need the data in code. If a particular color resonates, adoption is a straightforward wa
