Archaeology News Online Magazine positions itself as an international publication for archaeology, anthropology, and ancient history. Rather than a pure news wire, it combines current reporting with reference material, so a reader can move from a headline about a Bronze Age fortification to background on the period itself. The site is aimed at a global audience interested in how the past is studied and interpreted.
The core of the site is its news section, organized into archaeology, anthropology, paleontology, and academic categories, with coverage of excavations and research from Europe, Asia, and beyond. Around that sit structured reference areas: an archaeological timescale running from the Paleolithic through the Renaissance, profiles of ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Greece, and material on human evolution and sub-disciplines. Additional sections list books, conferences, and universities, and there are interactive extras including VR tours and quizzes.
Readers best served include students building background knowledge, researchers tracking discoveries in their region, and general enthusiasts who want more context than a headline provides. Educators may find the timescale and civilization pages handy for orientation, while the forum and quiz sections suit those who prefer a more participatory approach.
A practical approach is to start with the news feed for current coverage, then use the timescale and civilization categories to place a story in
