A Final Ward is the personal blog of Thomas Ptacek, a longtime figure in the information security community. Rather than covering news or product releases, it publishes occasional long-form essays that argue a position, often drawing on the author’s experience from the early days of stack overflow exploitation through to modern vulnerability disclosure debates.
The central piece here, “Vulnerability Research Is Cooked,” contends that AI coding agents will soon make high-impact vulnerability discovery dramatically cheaper and more common, not through gradual improvement but through step-function gains in frontier models. The argument is grounded in a historical account of 1990s exploit culture, when access to elite attention and scarce tooling gated who could find bugs.
The writing assumes familiarity with security concepts such as source trees, zero-days, and exploit development, so it is aimed at security researchers, engineers, and technically literate readers rather than beginners. Expect opinionated prose and references to community history that reward readers with some background in the field.
Because posts are infrequent and essay-length, the site works best when read selectively: skim the archive for topics relevant to your work, and treat each piece as an argument to evaluate rather than a tutorial. Readers wanting practical guidance should pair it with hands-on resources.
