WikiCity

WikiCity is a visualization experiment that maps the 100,000 most-viewed Wikipedia articles onto a single procedurally generated 3D city. Instead of a list or search box, you get a skyline: every building is an article, and the taller the tower, the more people read that page over the past 30 days. The result is an immediate, visual ranking of global curiosity that you can orbit, zoom, and explore from any angle.

The Explore mode is the heart of the site. Clicking a building opens a panel with the article’s view count, page size, view rank, and floor count, plus a direct link to read it on Wikipedia and a list of nearby buildings for lateral browsing. A random button jumps you to an unexpected article, which makes it easy to drift through topics you would never have searched for.

A second mode lets you pilot a plane over the city, fire guns, and launch missiles at the buildings, complete with speed, altitude, and destroyed counters. It is deliberately absurd and clearly separate from the reading experience, functioning as a stress-relief sandbox rather than a research feature.

WikiCity is aimed at the casually curious: Wikipedia readers who enjoy data visualization, students looking for a memorable entry point into trending topics, and anyone who likes playful web experiments. Because it visualizes popularity rather than quality or depth, treat it as a discovery layer and follow the links to Wikipedia for actual reading.
