Archive of Our Own (AO3) is a non-profit, non-commercial archive built by and for fans to host transformative fanworks. It covers books, movies, TV shows, anime and manga, music, video games, and real-person fiction, with more than 83,000 fandoms represented. The site is run as a project of the Organization for Transformative Works and is funded by donations rather than advertising.
The core of the site is its works archive, supported by a detailed tagging system that lets readers filter by fandom, relationship, character, and content warnings. Users can bookmark works, subscribe to series or authors, leave comments and kudos, and organize favorites into collections. Search supports sorting by kudos, hits, or date, and tag wrangling keeps the vocabulary consistent across the archive.
AO3 is aimed at fanfiction readers and writers, from casual browsers to prolific authors, as well as participants in fandom challenges and gift exchanges. Because accounts are required to publish or fully interact, the site uses an automated invitation queue; anyone can request an invitation and join when their turn comes up.
New users should start by browsing a favorite fandom and using tag filters to narrow results, then create an account to bookmark works and receive update notifications. Reading the site’s FAQ and content warning policies helps set expectations. In short, AO3 is a durable, community-governed home for fanworks at an unusually large scale.
