Site introduction

Impossible Machines is a browser-based prototype exploring a simple but unusual question: what if you could program the physical world the way you declare a desired state in software? Instead of placing gears and linkages by hand, you describe the world as you wish it to be, and the system fills in the missing mechanism between cause and effect.

The site offers a handful of guided challenges, such as making a detour, beating a brake, and producing a guided turn, alongside a freeform bench. On the bench you can move the sink, drop in obstacles, and reshape the setup, then watch a working design appear. A palette of parts, including cranks, weights, blocks, brakes, guides, bells, and doors, gives the experiments a concrete mechanical vocabulary.

It is aimed at the mechanically curious: interaction designers, engineers, students, and anyone interested in declarative interfaces and computational design. Because it is explicitly a thought experiment rather than a finished product, it rewards play and observation more than task completion.

The best approach is to start with the numbered challenges to learn the vocabulary, then switch to the freeform bench and deliberately break assumptions by moving parts and adding obstacles. Treat each result as a provocation about how much control a user should delegate to a system.
