Threads is a social networking service built around short text posts, replies, and reposts. It positions itself as a public conversation space, where accounts share quick thoughts, links, and updates that others can respond to directly. The product comes from Meta and is closely tied to Instagram, so much of its identity and account structure overlap with that ecosystem.
The core experience is a feed of posts from accounts you follow plus recommended content, with reply threads forming the main discussion format. Users can post text, images, and short video, repost others’ content, and quote posts to add commentary. Discovery features surface trending topics and suggested accounts, while controls let users limit who can reply to a post.
It is aimed at people who want a lighter, text-first alternative for public discussion, including creators, brands, and casual users who already have Instagram accounts. News and commentary communities also use it for real-time reactions, though the platform is not designed as a private messaging or group tool.
New users should set up reply and mention controls early, since the default experience is public and recommendation-driven. Following a focused set of accounts improves the feed quality, and muting or filtering keywords helps manage noisy topics. Overall, Threads works best as a fast, conversational layer on top of an existing social graph rather than a standalone community platform.
